Reminder about Evaluations from Dr. Adria Simon:

  • Make sure that you have at least 10 daily shift evaluations in Qualtrics.  If you are under the goal, please remind your attendings on your next several shifts (or the shift you’re on right now!) to complete them for you.
  • The self-evaluation template is due to your CCC member by May 5th. You’ll review this, your shift and semi-annual evaluations and other objective data with your CCC member at your end of year meeting.   It’s slightly spruced up, a little abbreviated and highly anticipated by your advisors.
  • Faculty Evals:  keep the daily shift evals coming. These are a big part of annual review for faculty and help us refine your learning experience on shift.  We are pivoting to the Semi-Annual Faculty Evaluations (select from the dropdown menu after initiating a survey) as we near the end of the academic year.   These QR codes and links also live on the residency site for your convenience!

Resident Retreat Day: Thursday, May 6

Shout out to Mary-Kate for arranging tickets to the Yankees game at 1:05PM.

If you are coming and still need a ticket, reach out to MK at 516-721-0097 and she will send you a ticket – be sure to click the link she sends you so she can keep track.

Important Documentation Reminder from Cornell:

-Remember to use the “.resmdm” template for your Assessment and Plan section of the note
-All patients should have a re-evaluation documented in their chart – if admitting the patient, the provider signout note is sufficient.  If you are discharging a patient, be sure to document a re-eval and final assessment in your original note or in a progres note.
Seniors: Please remind off-service residents, especially on their first day, about documentation expectations.

Campus Announcements

Hi all,

On behalf of the EM MCY Clerkship team, we wanted to send out all the wonderful feedback we have so far received from the students who have rotated with us over the past three months. A huge thank you to all of you for making their experience in the ED so meaningful for their future careers!

  1. We scored an average of 3.7 (out of 4) for ALL pertinent questions related to the clerkship, including meeting course objectives, ideal learning and clinical environment, etc. Not bad during a pandemic!
  2. Direct Student Feedback:
    1. “Great preceptors, loved the environment. Everyone working in the ED clearly loves what they do, and it’s an awesome place to work.”
    2. “All the attendings and residents were great to work with. I felt I received useful feedback and garnered a greater understanding of how things work in a hectic NY ED.”
    3. “The EM clerkship was amazing! I felt like there were plenty of opportunities to get hands-on experience with clinical skills. And all of the instructors were amazing teachers.”
  1. Resident Shout Outs!
    1. Dr. Mohammed Alkhafaji: “He is a great guy, super humble, loves to teach and is the EXACT type of person whom I would want to teach me medicine.”
    2. Dr. Jenny Qianjing Xia: “Jenny was absolutely fantastic. During one of my shifts, she went out of her way to teach me and involve me in any procedures. Despite the fact that she was busy…she let me practice my skills…She was kind and thoughtful. I loved working with her!”
    3. Dr. Michael DeFilippo: “Michael was an excellent instructor. He was great at guiding me through a differential for the patients he admitted, and he gave me the space to (work through my patients). I really learned a lot from him during my shift…”
  1. Attending Shout Outs!:
    1. Dr. Adria Simon: “I witnessed my first death in a medical setting…and she was thoughtful enough to pull me aside and talk to me about how I was feeling and offer to be a source of support moving forward.”
    2. Dr. Jimmy Truong: ” Very patient educator, followed up the shift with articles for the entire medical team.”
    3. Dr. Kiran Pandit: ” She supported me at the time…especially on the discussion board. She replied in a timely fashion to our confusions or unique encounters…pushed us to think more deeply, and then shed light on our reflections. She’s just awesome!”
    4. Dr. Lauren Curato: “Dr.Curato is an excellent instructor! She gave me helpful feedback…she was patient and thoughtful in her teaching and I really enjoyed working with her!”
    5. Dr. Adam Blumenberg: “Dr.Blumenberg was an excellent teacher and mentor. He was consistently generous with his time in teaching…even when busy. (He has) really helped to (teach me how to) keep my interview thorough, concise and on track.”

Overall, great job to all and thank you again for all you do! This is further testament to how hard you all work and how much it truly is appreciated by all who are privileged to experience it.

Thank you,
EM Clerkship team

From Columbia Operations and Education Leadership:  PGY 3’s at Notifications

Whenever possible,

  •  PGY 3’s should respond to all Area D notifications. They should write an MSE note.
  •  While they can assist with stabilization and procedures if they choose, a clear handoff from the PGY 3 resident to the Area D Attending + Resident/PA is necessary because PGY 3s will not be responsible for the continued coverage of patients in Area D, even if they participated in the initial resuscitation.
